The power of social media in updating Public Relations Practitioners about load shedding

  #eskomloadshedding

Load shedding is a mechanism used by energy utilities to reduce demand on the energy producing system by temporarily turning off electricity delivery to specific geographical areas. Power shortage is a serious issue in South Africa because businesses cannot reach their targeted goal on the given period of time due to unstable power. In this blog article, I will be highlighting the advantages, disadvantages, and recommendations on how to effectively use social media as a Public Relation Practitioner to educate and raise awareness about load shedding. Let's dwell in the insights of how social media is able to spread news on this important issue:

Strategic use of social media

Advantages

Social media has made public relations more "friendly" to all stakeholders in a corporation, leading in a new marketing discipline known as "relationship marketing." This enables businesses of all sizes and types to be more welcoming, inviting, and approachable. With the support of social media, content issued through press releases, emails, and other PR-related channels may live longer, circulate quicker, and reach wider. Therefore, through social media, Public Relations Practitioners can be updated and also update its audience about Eskom introducing load shedding and its procedures.

Disadvantages

Due to different opinions disinformation can spread quickly on social media thus people can get wrong messages about load shedding. Load shedding has become a threat to those who uses television broadcast to advertise their goods and services therefore PRPs can be affected in a way that they won’t be able to reach their target audience. People and Eskom must avoid disinformation and search for reliable sources on social media. This will make it easier for PRPs to get reliable information. When talking about the issue about this issue one need to be considerate as it is causing stress in South African’s lives.

Recommendations

Through social media PRPs can raise awareness on power outage by communicating with its audience. Social media has made it easier for people to learn about load shading in way that it allows Eskom to send its updates on its schedules so that people can always be updated. I can recommend that one must download load shedding app as it is useful for load shedding updates. I also recommend the use of hashtags because it helps to get clarity on information about power shortage.

In conclusion, social media is a great tool to spread information in order to update PR Professionals and since load shedding has become a stressful issue in the South African’s lives, it is easy for one to get updates on the current schedules on load shedding therefore without any doubts, social media is here to stay and will continue to evolve.

  1. Scheduled load shedding is controlled by way of sharing the available electricity among all its customers. By switching off parts of the network in a planned and controlled manner, the system remains stable throughout the day, and the impact is spread over a wider base of customers.

  2. Loadshedding has become the not so new modus operandi of eskom. This is done to alleviate electrical tension that may perpetuate the issues they are already facing. It has caused disadvantages to the people though, appliances are being repaired regularly due to this. Media spreads fake news to play with people's mental states. The most vulnerable communities are those who are poor.

    1. I agree with that because one of the rumors or should I say the trending issue was that the government was owing Eskom izumbulu zemali which I think it was a fact because it was all over the news. And with regards to load shedding affecting us badly, it has made it hard for small businesses to generate profits or solid income if I may put it like that.

    2. I agree with the fact that the reason behind load shedding might be because the government has been owing eskom . Additionally, the coal power plants that have been broken down due to overburdening can also be the reason behind load shedding because eskom might find it hard to provide people with full time electricity.
If money it is the problem I'd recommend that eskom can come up with a negotiation settlement with the mines that deal with coal to reach a certain agreement with eskom to purchase coal in lower prices.

  3. True, there are people who advertise their products and services through televisions for example, now if there is loadshading it will affect the PRP PRP because the target audience won't be reached as estimated and that may affect the quality of work. Thanks for mentionning that.

  5. Load shedding plays a huge part in affecting our everyday lives, businesses as a whole, millions of rands are lost daily. Cost of living is high just because of LOADSHEDDING

  7. Disruption of systems that rely on a stable electricity supply.Loadshedding can disrupt the operation of systems such as sewage treatment plants, water pumping stations, and waste management facilities. This can lead to environmental degradation and health hazards.

  8. How will PRPs even raise awareness on social media when there's constant power cuts? Some informal businesses and other businesses are really being affected, there's a whole lot of many reasons why we need electricity, it's a necessity. This issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

  9. I agree to a very great extent with the information mentioned above because ...as much as the loadshedding app and schedule was created it has some how had a positive response to many people, because instead of seeing electric going off while busy for an example with cooking one would be able to time their way of doing things that requires electric thus indeed social media has also played a huge role in making sure that one is aware of the loadshedding
